Your Guide to Christmas in London

Christmas past at Sutton House

Christmas past at Sutton House

Take a playful journey through 500 years of Christmas traditions with a tour of Hackney’s oldest house, whose halls will be decked for Christmas from 24 November to 19 December 2021.

Visit for a guided tour on a Wednesday, Friday or Sunday, and see Christmas through the eyes of Sutton House's former residents - from Tudor times to the present day.

At almost 500 years old Sutton House epitomises cosiness, with its oak-panelled rooms, shuttered windows and huge fireplaces. And this Christmas you can come in from the cold for a guided tour by candlelight, to enjoy it as the Tudors, Georgians and Victorians would have.

From the oak-lined Linenfold Parlour to Charles Pulley’s cosy Regency study, each space has an intriguing tale to tell about its past occupants - from a leading Tudor courtier to 1980s anarcho squatters. You’ll also see how residents celebrated Christmas, from tying a ribbon to the Tudors’ yule log to their lavish Christmas feast - including a turkey that walked from Norfolk, a mouth-watering Wassail bowl, and a rather gruesome cockenthrice (a pig with the hind quarters of a turkey!).

You’ll go on to experience a modest but stylish Georgian Christmas, featuring beautiful holly and other evergreens, and the beginnings of some still-familiar traditions in our richly-decorated Victorian Study: including colourful crackers, Christmas cards, a decorated tree and toys for the house's children.

Expired - Event is in the past.
